Don’t use Bleach/Disinfectant Wipes on your Phone!

With the current COVID-19 news on our minds, it’s a good time for a reminder about keeping our phones/tablets clean! After all, it does no good to wash our hands and then immediately put them on our grubby screens…

How would you clean your phone? Many people’s first thoughts are to use Clorox or Lysol disinfectant wipes. They work great for door knobs or counter tops, but harsh chemicals like those are terrible for your phone screen! It can remove the oleophobic (anti-finger print) coating as well as eat into your screen, eventually causing it to stop working.

After researching what else we can use, Tech Rescue’s Gadget Recon team has determined three best practices:

1. If you are a little bit DIY, you can use 70% isopropyl alcohol with water combination. Mix the alcohol in a one-to-one ratio with distilled water and put it in a spray bottle. Then spray it on to a microfiber cloth and use that to wipe down your phone. Try not to use paper towels as they can scratch your screen.

2.If you don’t have the time or desire to DIY, you can spend a little more and get pre-made wipes from Amazon.

3. The last option might be better in the long run, but it also requires the most out-of-pocket. Professional cleaning companies often use UV light to kill germs and some enterprising gadget manufacturers created a UV phone cradle like this one!
