Internet Explorer is a bad choice for web browsing. It has many security holes that allow programs like spyware to run just by visiting a website. Many times, the user doesn’t even know they are infected. The best way to combat spyware, popups, viruses, etc. is to stop using Internet Explorer. The second best way is to keep an anti-virus program updated and keep windows updated.
1. Stop using IE. Try Firefox instead. I have been using Firefox since 2002 and have not had any major issues. The Firefox installer will even copy your favorites.
Get Firefox.
2. Get AVG anti-virus. It’s free for personal use and it is magnitudes better than Norton or McAfee. The fact that it is free means that there is no excuse to not have anti-viral protection.
Get AVG.
3. Download and run Spybot Search and Destroy. Spybot searches out and kills almost all current spyware. Tech Rescue recommends updating and running it at least once per month.
Get Spybot.
4. Download and run Adware. Adaware is very similar to Spybot. Generally what Spybot misses, Adaware will find and kill. Tech Rescue suggests running this once per month as well.
Get Adaware.
5. If you have not kept up with Windows Update, this is the time to start. If you have Windows 2000 or XP, your computer will even tell you (an icon near the clock) if there are updates. If you have Windows ME, 98, or 95, you have to go there yourself (at least once a month). Unfortunately, you need to use IE to go there because Firefox will not work.
Visit Windows Update.
